C4XC Youth Performance Cycling Team is a completely youth-centric cycling club. Athletes are 11 to 18, and the program is geared towards developing well-rounded cycling athletes.  We are a racing team, with strong community-oriented values.

We are all about joy on two wheels

Our journey is all about friendship, skill-building, and pushing the limits. Come join the 2024 adventure, it begins April 21st!

The 4 Cs

  • Focusing on fitness, technical skills, and tactics. U13 - Learn to Train U16 - Train to Train U16 and - Train to Compete U18 (LTAD model beside).

  • In children, resiliency is tied with community and connection. Our goal is to create a positive and fun club atmosphere, with multi-ages connecting.

  • Participating is where all the experience happens in succeeding and in failing in life.

  • Because that is what we want for our youth to tackle all aspects of life!

Meet the Team

  • Susanne McArthur

I’m a teacher for close to 20 years and I race all the bikes! Cyclocross, MTB, gravel, road, criterium, triathlon and recently epic adventuring! I love to compete and train! I have been a high-level athlete my whole life, and continually thirst for new challenges. Competitive swimming and playing water polo through high school and university brought me to triathlon in my 20s. I then competed as a nationally ranked Elite and Pro triathlete in ITU events. So my past is full of road racing, criteriums, draft-legal triathlon and time-trialing! But now I spend most of my time on my gravel/cx and MTB. I currently hold an Elite and Expert designation in Cyclocross and MTB. I feel strongly about continuing to be a strong role-model in striving for excellence. • Erik Bakke

Erik and bikes have been inseparable since he learned to ride, two wheels are the freedom and self actualization tool of his dreams. Erik has raced in cyclocross, XC, time trials and road for 20+ years in Alberta, with a couple provincial championships to show for the effort (XC, TT), plus a lot of memories and friends. His mountain bike racing has taken him to Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Tasmania, New Zealand, Mongolia, Nepal, Spain and of course the USA and Canada. Two wheeled adventures have included Japan, Myanmar, Cambodia, Turkey and a good percentage of Europe. Erik still loves racing and being a mentor to younger cyclists with fresher legs, especially his crew of girls, wife and three daughters, whom all are involved in cycling. When snow flies, Erik does anything on a downhill ski slope, and earned a few FIS points in history racing telemark for team Canada. • Cindy Bakke

I love riding my bike! I ride all the bikes; XC, TT, road, gravel, CX, even a tandem bike! Cross season is my favorite season, nothing makes me happier than a double header CX weekend with my whole family racing! I grew up playing competitive soccer, then found myself on two wheels. I quickly discovered that biking changes you as a person! You are your best person while pedaling a bike! Riding a bike has taken Erik and I all around the globe, with stops in Italy, Spain, Turkey, Myanmar, Guatemala, Colorado, Montana and California. Racing bikes has taught me you can do anything you put your mind to. I love sharing that by example with my three daughters, and watching their love of cycling grow. My goal is to teach our next generation the magic of riding and racing their bikes! NCCP Let’s Ride Community Initiation; NCCP Ready to Race Intro to Competition

Jon has been racing blazingly fast from XC Canada Cups to marathons, international stage races, enduros, road, cyclocross and TT’s for over 20 years. He is a wealth of knowledge for those who share a relentless passion for hunting speed, formed from detailed study of the foundations of cycling with a complimentary knack for disregarding traditions not at the vanguard of cycling science. Jon’s technical mastery is passed along with great affection for the next generation. He humbly sets C4’s benchmarks for blistering climbing, and if you’ve made it to the top of a climb with Jon good luck with seeing anything other than dust on the descent. Jon is also a proud trail builder and has contributed many now staple to the Alberta mountain biking community.

What you need to know

Our team has limited spots. If we have room, we will host a “Try-It” day. In order to ensure we are a good fit, before registering, your child will join for a session.

Our team rides predominantly from West Bragg Creek. We also ride Hwy 66 trails, and in Calgary, Cochrane and Canmore.

Spring session starts mid-end April and Fall session starts early September.

For reasons of safety and liability we will require that ALL people (adults and children) participating in any group activity become members of C4XC & have valid insurance through ABA (Alberta Bicycle Association).  Athletes = UCI Youth racing license; Coaches/parent-ride alongs = general membership.

Registration for C4 membership is on Zone 4 with the program registration. Bike Cochrane $30 membership necessary for midweek racing.

Licenses must be forwarded to the head coach.

If you are new to the team, your child will attend the first session as a “Try-It” skills assessment. No membership is required for a one time trial session. You must print and sign the AoR waiver (above). After the first session, if the child is continuing, a club membership as well as ABA membership is required.

FAQs

Are the practices the same as last year?

Yes. The format of the team, including days and times will remain the same. The locations are dependent on conditions, but most practices will still start at WBC. Early season riding will take place in Calgary, Cochrane and hwy 66 - these locations dry out more quickly.

Can I sign up for just the Spring?

Yes. Use the code SPRING2024 when registering.

Can I ride-along?

Yes. On Sundays parents will have an opportunity to join the ride. Parents must be club members as well as ABA general members and have completed the free online training Safe Sport Training. Parents also need to be able to keep up! Lol.

What about the development group?

There are very few spots, and so there is no guaranteed entry in this group. So, do not register your younger child. The first session on April 21 will be an assessment, as we need to ensure the group's cohesive abilities. You will sign a "Try-It" waiver and if your child will continue THEN you can register them for the club, program and ABA. Thank you in advance for your understanding, we need to do this in order for the group to run safely and effectively.

Are the prices the same?

Yes. The new price reflects added sessions as well as a discounted jersey.

When does the session start?

Please see the C4XC calendar .

Do you have training camps?

Yes. We host a Spring and Summer training camp. Please have a look at the calendar link above which can also be found in the Team Membership Package.

What about a team kit?

All athletes on the team will receive a new jersey. When you register you will input a size for a Jakroo Fondo jersey. Other items will be for sale in the team shop (link later on).

How will the team stay informed?

You will get a link to join the C4XC Cycle Club App (download on your phone). This will have the schedule.

What are the pre-requisites?

Your child should be confident on blue trails and be able to be positive and stay motivated on longer rides. They should have a well-maintained mountain bike with front shock, helmet, gloves and carry their own gear and nutrition.
